Discover the history and mission of CHR Kolda
The Kolda Regional Hospital (CHRK) is a level 2 public health establishment and the reference hospital for the Kolda region and southern Senegal. Set at Saré Moussa on a site of 9 hectares, it provides comprehensive care for patients from across the Fouladou region and the surrounding areas. The hospital sits close to three borders, with Gambia, Guinea Bissau and Guinea Conakry, which gives it a particular role.
The hospital offers a broad range of care across many medical specialties, including internal medicine, cardiology, endocrinology and diabetology, dermatology, neurology, nephrology and dialysis, paediatrics and oncology, and surgical specialties including general surgery, paediatric surgery, orthopaedics, urology, ear nose and throat surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology and dentistry, alongside cross cutting departments such as the emergency department and anaesthesia and intensive care.
Its medical and technical facilities include a medical analysis laboratory, a medical imaging department, a hospital pharmacy, physiotherapy and forensic medicine.
As part of its modernisation, the hospital is steadily broadening its provision with specialist consultations in neurosurgery and rheumatology, through partnerships with other regional hospitals. It is also improving the experience of users by introducing digital payment through Wave and Orange Money.

Our History
The Kolda Regional Hospital Center was inaugurated on May 2, 2002 by His Excellency Maître Abdoulaye Wade, President of the Republic of Senegal. Construction work, begun in 1998 and entrusted to the Compagnie Sahélienne d’Entreprises (CSE), represented an investment of 7.8 billion FCFA, financed 79% by the Islamic Development Bank and 21% by the State’s Consolidated Investment Budget.
The establishment was elevated to Public Health Establishment status by Decree No. 2004-1256 of September 17, 2004.
Under the leadership of Dr. Fallou Niang, a former hospital intern and ENT physician, the CHRK has seen remarkable growth with the arrival of many specialists, infrastructure renovation, and strengthening of the technical platform.

Dr. Makhan DANFAKHA

Dr. Makhan Danfakha is a physician, epidemiologist, and public health expert, recognized for his commitment to innovation, strengthening health systems, and the One Health approach. Currently the Director of the Kolda Regional Hospital Center, he is working to transform healthcare services through integrated approaches that combine quality of care, risk management, hospital governance, and organizational innovation.
A graduate of Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD), he pursued an academic career of excellence marked by several high-level specializations. He holds a Master's degree in Integrated Health Risk Management (One Health), jointly awarded by the University of Liège, the University of Namur, and the Free University of Brussels, where he graduated at the top of his class. He also holds a University Diploma in Emergency Medicine (University of Bordeaux), a Certificate in Aerospace Medicine (University of Lorraine, Nancy), and a Master's degree in Public Health, specializing in Epidemiology.
His expertise has been strengthened through leading national and international responsibilities. In particular, he served as a "One Health" Expert with the High National Council for Health Security (HCNSS-OH), through the National Multisectoral One Health Security Program (PNMSS-OH) of the Prime Minister's Office of Senegal, where he was responsible for the strategic and operational monitoring of the implementation of health security interventions. In this capacity, he contributed to multisectoral planning, the strengthening of integrated surveillance systems, the coordination of health risk management, the fight against zoonoses, and the implementation of national and international commitments in health security.
As coordinator of the international EXTRAM-Sen project (IRD/ISED-UCAD/USSEIN/LSHTM), he leads research on the effects of extreme temperatures on maternal and child health in Senegal. His work is part of an interventional research approach aimed at generating evidence to strengthen the resilience of populations and health systems to climate change.
His background also includes experience at CIRAD in Montpellier, where he contributed to structuring a regional Caribbean “One Health” platform, mobilizing the human, animal, and environmental health sectors around issues of health security, territorial resilience, and sustainable development.
With extensive clinical experience, recognized expertise in public health, and mastery of interdisciplinary approaches, Dr. Makhan Danfakha is also a trainer, mentor to students and young researchers, designer of innovative projects, and a committed advocate for health development. A speaker and association leader, he embodies a new generation of healthcare professionals dedicated to providing pragmatic, sustainable, and evidence-based solutions to contemporary health challenges, both nationally and internationally.

The CHRK has a constantly evolving technical platform. An ambitious rehabilitation process is underway, including the renewal of the emergency, intensive care, and neonatology departments.
